A Tenant’s Guide to Preparing for Winter

Winter may be the festive season, but it can bring its fair share of challenges for renters. By taking a few thoughtful steps, you can keep your rental property cosy, safe, and efficient while avoiding unnecessary hassles. Here’s a short guide to help you prepare.

1. Seal Up Your Space

Cold draughts sneaking in through windows and doors can make your home chilly and raise your heating bills. Use draught excluders or door snakes to block gaps under doors and seal windows with temporary weatherstripping. If your windows are particularly draughty, talk to your Property Manager about finding a resolution.

2. Keep the Heating System Happy

Reliable heating is a winter must! Test your radiators or heating system early in the season. If something seems off—like cold spots on radiators or unusual boiler noises—let your Property Manager know immediately. Most landlords are responsible for ensuring heating systems are functional, so addressing problems before the cold sets in is better. To manage costs, consider setting timers to warm your home before you wake up or return in the evening, keeping the thermostat at a steady temperature.

3. Layer Up Your Comfort

Winter is the perfect excuse to get cosy! Add thick curtains to keep the warmth inside, or layer thermal liners if curtains aren’t an option. A few rugs on hard floors can make a world of difference, helping you stay warm and saving you from chilly steps first thing in the morning. Stock up on soft blankets for nights in and get creative with pillows to add an extra layer of insulation to your space.

4. Stay Safe Outdoors

Winter weather doesn’t just affect the inside of your home. If your property has gutters, report any blockages to your Property Manager, as clogged gutters can freeze and cause water damage. Similarly, if snow or ice builds up on walkways or entryways, notify your Property Manager about maintenance or supplies like de-icing salt.

5. Be Prepared for Surprises

No one likes to think about emergencies, but being prepared can save you stress later. Familiarise yourself with the location of your water shutoff valve in case of frozen or burst pipes. Have a small winter toolkit on hand with essentials like a torch, batteries, and basic tools. Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they’re functional—this is particularly important when using heating systems.

6. Communicate Early and Often

Haslams and your landlord want your home to be safe and comfortable during the winter. Let us know if you notice something like a dripping tap, a faulty seal, or an uninsulated pipe. Small fixes now can prevent big problems later, and most landlords appreciate proactive communication.

Winter doesn’t have to be daunting—it’s an opportunity to make your rental property feel like a snug and safe retreat. By taking care of small tasks now and staying in touch with your Property Manager, you’ll be ready to embrace the season with warmth and peace of mind.
